Becoming a Member (International Membership)

SMFM welcomes the diversity of thought, skills, knowledge, and opinions brought by an increasing international membership pool. The International Member Application has been refined in 2016 to meet the evolving needs of SMFM’s growing international community. In the spirit of fairness and opportunity for all healthcare practitioners around the world, SMFM has launched a tiered dues assessment based on the United Nations Human Development Index and gross national income for each country.

Note1: Healthcare practitioners in Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo (DRC), Liberia, Malawi, Niger, and Somalia interested in joining SMFM please contact us by email smfm@smfm.org for assistance.
Note2: SMFM understands that not all countries have the US equivalent of a MFM certificate or degree. Therefore, SMFM membership is still available to applicants from Tiers II - IV without a credential.

Tier I International Membership Types: 

International Regular Membership shall be available to those physicians duly certified by in Obstetrics and Gynecology and have completed post-graduate education with certification in areas related to MFM, such as Genetics, Infectious Disease, Fetal Medicine, or Critical Care Medicine. Regular memberships shall also be available to Ph.Ds. or Post-doctoral candidates, not otherwise eligible for certification in MFM and who are primarily engaged in research in perinatal medicine as evidenced by a record of publications and/or extramural funding

To apply for Regular membership, international applicants must submit the following: 

  • A copy of their diploma of training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in their country of origin and documentation of post-graduate training in MFM or within an area related to MFM (e.g. Genetics, Infectious Disease, Fetal Medicine, or Critical Care Medicine), or 
  • A copy of their diploma confirming successful completion of a Ph.D. and evidence of research in perinatal medicine, for Ph.Ds. not otherwise eligible for certification in MFM, and
  • The applicant's current curriculum vitae, and
  • First year dues at $237.50 (after the first year dues payment of $475).

International Affiliate Membership shall be available to investigators who have achieved a Ph.D./MS degree in fields as physiology or pharmacology, or an MD/DO without further training for general specialty approved program, and who have worked with specific focus in maternal, fetal, and neonatal medicine. 

To apply for Affiliate membership, international applicants must submit the following: 

  • Documentation of successful completion of relevant training,
  • The applicant's current curriculum, and
  • First year dues at $212.50 (after the first year dues payment of $425).

International Associate Membership shall be available to those physicians who have completed, a fellowship training program or equivalent in their country of origin and individuals who have completed training for general specialty certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology in an area related to MFM, such as Genetics, Infectious Disease, Fetal Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. 

To apply for Associate membership, international applicants must submit the following: 

  • Documentation of successful completion of training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in their country of origin,
  • The applicant's current curriculum vitae, and
  • First year dues at $212.50 (after the first year dues payments are $425).
