Type 2 diabetes and obesity co-exist in pregnant women, yet courses and lectures tend to focus on gestational diabetes (GDM). This course will provide practical clinical knowledge for the management and treatment of pregnant women with diabetes and obesity, either co-existing or in isolation. We will also highlight strategies to improve antenatal surveillance and postpartum management, such as aneuploidy screening, fetal ultrasound and prevention of wound complications.

This course has been approved for 7 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  1. To review prenatal management of women with Type 2 diabetes, including pharmacologic management and antenatal testing.
  2. To discuss the role of bariatric surgery in obese women and the implications on a future pregnancy.
  3. To outline diagnostic approaches and management of common coexisting medical illness and complications in obese women.
  4. To emphasize the importance of lifestyle interventions for women with obesity in pregnancy.
  5. To review the data that translates into our recommended dietary management of the diabetic pregnancy.
