Becoming a Champion for Access to Comprehensive Reproductive Health Services

This course will provide SMFM members with resources to champion access to comprehensive reproductive health services for their patients. Family planning and MFM faculty will review the use and technique of manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) and medication abortion and discuss best practices for counseling and managing patients with complex medical conditions and advocating in a complex policy arena. Following this course, participants will have the skills to identify barriers to implementation of comprehensive reproductive health services and develop strategies to increase access to these services at the institutional level. 

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of Global Learning Collaborative (GLC) and SMFM. GLC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

  1. Describe and practice uterine evacuation using the manual vacuum aspirator in a variety of clinical settings
  2. Explain the logistical and clinical processes and challenges for instituting medication abortion provision 
  3. Review the complex considerations that may occur when counseling high-risk patients, through clinical case discussions
  4. Identify barriers to institutional implementation and practice advocacy strategies for overcoming these challenges
