Given the continued increase in maternal mortality within the United States, care for critically ill patients during pregnancy is an important area to focus on.  However, because these events are rare there are few opportunities to really practice for them.  This course will not only review the current literature on the selected critical care topics but also provide the chance to practice them in a hands-on and multidisciplinary manner.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of Global Learning Collaborative (GLC) and SMFM. GLC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Global Learning Collaborative designates this enduring material for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

  1. Understand how to diagnose and manage sepsis in pregnancy
  2. Gain knowledge and skills in the treatment of postpartum hemorrhage (i.e., uterotonics, correction of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, balloon tamponade, initiation of interventional radiology or hysterectomy)
  3. Understand the treatment of drug overdoses in pregnancy including opioids, methamphetamine and other intentional overdoses
  4. Describe and practice the diagnostic and treatment algorithms used during maternal cardiac arrest
  5. Take part in hands-on practice for critical care cases based on actual patients
  6. Discuss and review vascular access for the critically ill
