Course Description:
Pregnancy related bleeding and clotting issues account for a third of maternal deaths worldwide. Despite the impact of postpartum hemorrhage there has been a disproportionately limited amount of research addressing the problem. This course will provide updates on specific gaps in research regarding the prediction, prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage while providing information on where we currently are in addressing PPH through implementation science, prediction optimization, timely existing medical treatments, and upcoming clinical trials. This course will also address racial and systemic inequities that account for the overwhelming discrepancy in maternal mortality among different racial and ethnic groups in the United States. The goal of the course is to serve as both a call to action to inspire innovation as well as outline priorities for obstetric providers to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity globally.

Learning Objectives:
·
  • To identify barriers and solutions to prevention of PPH and timely management with efficacious therapeutics(i.e. tranexamic acid).
  • Create ‘benchmarks’ for clinical audits as facilities monitor timely PPH management (i.e. use of TXA within one hour of diagnosed PPH).
  • Review successful implementation science strategies that can be utilized to mitigate inequities among women of color and those in low resource settings
  • Highlight ongoing discovery/translational research and future pipeline of biomarkers/devices to advance early detection and management of PPH.
