Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: Online collection of nearly 20 publicly available datasets including U.S. births, deaths, vaccinations, environmental exposures and population estimates. It contains the only publicly-available data set for maternal mortality data.

Infant Feeding Practices Study II (IFPS II) and Year Six Follow-Up (Y6FU)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: Longitudinal study from 2005-2007 that followed about 2,000 mother-infant pairs from the third trimester of pregnancy throughout the first year of life to study a variety of infant feeding practices. In 2012, the FDA and CDC conducted the Year Six Follow-Up (Y6FU) study to characterize the health, development and dietary patterns of these children at 6 years of age.

National Immunization Survey Study
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: Group of telephone surveys conducted by CDC’s NCIRD used to obtain vaccination coverage rates for U.S. children 19-35 months (NIS-Child) and for U.S. adolescents 13-17 years (NIS-Teen).

Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: Surveillance project that collects state-specific, population-based data on maternal attitudes and experiences before, during, and shortly after pregnancy.

Availability: Free, requires formal application and signed data sharing agreement.


Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) Case Registry
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: Case Registry in participating U.S. states aimed to provide population-based SUID surveillance and to categorize SUID cases using standard definitions.

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)

CDC National Center for Health Statistics

Study Description: Nationwide survey designed to collect information about the health and diet of people in the United States.

Availability: Free, no formal application required.



National Health Interview Study (NHIS)

CDC National Center for Health Statistics

Study Description: National survey used to monitor trends in illness and disability and to track progress toward achieving national health objectives.

National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG)
CDC National Center for Health Statistics

Study Description: National survey that gathers information on family life, marriage and divorce, pregnancy, infertility, use of contraception, and men’s and women’s health.

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: Health-related telephone surveys that collect state data about U.S. residents regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. BRFSS completes more than 400,000 adult interviews each year, making it the largest continuously conducted health survey system in the world.

National Vital Statistics System (NVSS)
CDC National Center for Health Statistics

Study Description: Oldest and most successful example of intergovernmental data sharing that collects and disseminates the Nation’s official vital statistics on births, marriages, divorces, and deaths.

National Health Care Surveys (NHCS)
CDC National Center for Health Statistics

Study Descriptions: Collection of 14 surveys designed to answer key questions of interest to health care policy makers, public health professionals, and researchers. These include the factors that influence the use of health care resources, the quality of health care, including safety, and disparities in health care services provided to population subgroups in the U.S.

Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B)
Department of Education

Study Description: Nationally representative sample of approximately 14,000 children born in the U.S. in 2001 aimed to provide detailed information about children's early life experiences including health, development, care, and education from birth through kindergarten.

Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity and Stillbirth (GAPPS) Bioservices

Study Description: Widely-accessible biobank of more than 136,000 specimens from over 2,500 diverse pregnant women and their infants linked to extensive demographic and medical data. This biobank is aimed to study predictors of preterm birth, stillbirth, adverse pregnancy outcomes and learn more about the fetal origins of adult diseases.

Global Pregnancy Collaboration (CoLab)

Study Description: International consortium of centers that enables sharing of data and biological samples with investigators worldwide to facilitate research studies of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Study Description: One of the largest U.S. studies that looks at risks and potential cause of birth defects among 40,000 women who delivered babies between 1997-2011.

National Inpatient Sample
AHRQ Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project

Study Description: Largest publicly available all-payer inpatient healthcare database designed to produce U.S. regional and national estimates of inpatient utilization, access, charges, quality and outcomes using ICD diagnosis and procedure codes along with other demographic data.

Study Description: One of the largest proprietary U.S. claims databases that includes hospital discharge database and electronic health record database as well as datasets that combine claims data with other patient and employee data.
