Associate Member Representative

The SMFM Associate Member Representative (AMR) position offers associate members the opportunity to engage more deeply with SMFM leadership and help shape the future of the Society. This role is designed to identify and develop emerging leaders in the field, encouraging long-term involvement with SMFM and the Foundation for SMFM.

About the Position

This is a two-year leadership term that provides valuable experience working alongside SMFM’s Board of Directors and committees.

Before applying, candidates are encouraged to review the time commitments and discuss them with their fellowship or division director.

Key details:

  • Election period: November – December each year
  • New term begins: At the SMFM Pregnancy Meeting™ following the election

Leadership and Committee Responsibilities

Serve as an Ex-Officio (Non-Voting) Member of the SMFM Board of Directors

  • Attend Board of Directors (BOD) meeting at the 2026 Pregnancy Meeting™
    • In-person attendance required: February 7–8, 2026 | Las Vegas, NV
  • Attend Interim BOD Meeting
    • In-person attendance required: July 16–18, 2026 | Austin, TX
  • Participate in several BOD conference calls throughout the year

Serve on the Fellowship Affairs Committee (FAC)

  • Attend the FAC meeting held annually (before or during the Pregnancy Meeting™)
  • Join several FAC conference calls throughout the year

Serve on the Fellows Class Representative Subcommittee

  • Collaborate with class representatives, AMRs, and FAC members
  • Participate in subcommittee calls led by AMRs
Attendance at Various Events 

As an AMR, you’ll represent associate members and actively engage with the SMFM community by participating in events such as:

  • SMFM Pregnancy Meeting™
  • First-Year Fellows Retreat & Workshop (each year, one AMR attends and assists)
  • Additional meetings and events as needed
Engage, Lead, and Represent

AMRs serve as the voice of associate members within SMFM leadership. Past AMR-led projects have included:

  • Creating “Advice for Applying to Fellowship” resources on the SMFM website
  • Developing a new election process for AMRs
  • Redesigning fellow events at the Annual Meeting
  • Restructuring the class representative system
