2021 Annual Report

Dear Colleagues:

We are pleased to share the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s 2021 Annual Report. Intended to be a snapshot of the year, the Annual Report showcases areas of tremendous growth for the Society. Highlights include:

  • We defended access to abortion care by rallying in front of the Supreme Court, hosting a day of action on Capitol Hill, and leading an amicus brief in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to dispel false claims related to “fetal pain.” As many uncertainties remain, we will continue to advocate for reproductive rights and freedom.

  • To better understand the demographic composition of SMFM and to further our commitment to inclusivity, we collected information about race, ethnicity, gender, and more from SMFM members and leadership (Board of Directors and committees). We were pleased to confirm that our leadership generally reflects the demographics of the membership, and we will continue to actively strive for the diversity and representation that are crucial if we are to have a strong and capable organization.

  • Together with our partners, we developed clinical guidelines on topics including pre-eclampsia, hepatitis C, preterm birth, and more.

  • Despite national economic hardship, we ensured a strong, sustainable future with a net financial gain, which was reinvested into programs and resources to further advance the mission and support for the membership.

Members are at the center of all our accomplishments, and we are grateful for our long-time members and new members alike. In fact, our membership grew by 10% in 2021. While we recognize that threats to maternal health and patient autonomy have sharply intensified, our dedicated membership and our commitment to health equity leave us optimistic for the future. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the SMFM staff or members of our Board directly.
