Celebrating the Life of Dr. Jay D. Iams

News,

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) mourns the passing of Dr. Jay D. Iams, a past president of SMFM (2003), pioneering maternal-fetal medicine physician, researcher, educator, and mentor whose contributions profoundly shaped our field. Before retiring, Dr. Iams was the Frederick Zuspan Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ohio State University in Columbus.

Over a distinguished academic career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Iams was an internationally recognized leader in the study and prevention of preterm birth. He authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and served for more than 20 years as a site principal investigator and member of the Steering Committee for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network. He also served as President of the American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society and as an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dr. Iams' legacy extends far beyond his scientific accomplishments. He was deeply committed to compassionate, evidence-based care and to addressing the social needs of patients at risk for preterm birth. As a teacher and mentor, he influenced generations of obstetricians, MFM subspecialists, investigators, and other healthcare leaders.

SMFM is grateful for Dr. Iams' extraordinary service to our Society and to the field of MFM. His groundbreaking work in preterm birth, unwavering patient care, and mentorship of countless colleagues and trainees leave an enduring legacy.

We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Pat, his children and grandchildren, and the many colleagues, trainees, patients, and friends whose lives he touched.
