SMFM Statement in Response to Final House Vote on H.R. 1

News,

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) is deeply disappointed in today’s final vote by the House of Representatives resulting in the passage of H.R. 1.

The deep cuts to the Medicaid program contained in this legislation jeopardize the insurance coverage millions of low-income pregnant people and their families rely on to receive quality care and protect their health.

In addition, the Medicaid cuts in H.R.1 will likely lead to the closure of hospitals and clinics that provide essential healthcare to people living in rural and underserved communities, placing entire communities at significant risk for losing access to any healthcare.

This legislation fails to preserve and expand access to high-quality pregnancy care for all Americans. SMFM pledges to work with elected officials to mitigate the harmful impacts of H.R. 1, including preserving postpartum Medicaid extension and protecting essential services for pregnant patients.
